Christmas 2011 Newsletter
Autumn leaves are falling en masse and already the early chills of winter are appearing. Along with the shorter days and dropping temperatures, our skin now has to deal with the drying effects of central heating. There is no reason to suffer from dry or environmentally irritated skin this winter, as we are proud to introduce nine new natural skincare solutions that will bring nourishment and healing to your skin. They also will make perfect hassle-free Christmas gifts for your family and friends, colleagues and clients and of course, YOU.
Each of these new products has been created to maximise health and wellness on all levels: body mind and soul, with ingredients that are not only natural and organic, but of the highest quality and life force so that each and every drop contributes to your total well being.
Says Materia Aromatica's founder Isabelle Poignart: When designing our skin care range, I chose the vegetable oils carefully for their therapeutic aspect. The essential oils were selected to satisfy both the therapeutic aspect and the olfactory senses: for instance the night oil contains neroli and frankincense that are beneficial to skin repair. Combined with jasmine and bergamot, they make a delicious uplifting and relaxing aroma. I believe that what one put on the face should not only be therapeutic but also beautiful. I have worked hard to combine these two aspects.”
Developing a new product is a labour of love, with countless hours and months spent researching, experimenting and then testing and re formulating until a product emerges that is satisfying and fulfilling. Each of our new products works on healing the body, mind and soul in a manner that is enjoyable and where one’s emotions are lifted.
Isabelle has drawn on her many years of expertise to create beautiful and effective skincare solutions with fragrances that transform the ordinary into extraordinary. She says: “Blending fragrances is an extremely creative process. It is fascinating to create a beautiful aroma, using oils which at first have not much going for them. Take galbanum or black pepper, must have of the perfumer's palette: On their own they don’t have a pleasant smell, but when creatively blended, are what makes a perfume work. “
The skincare range is packaged in specially designed boxes that will add a distinctive style to the products, enabling you to display them in your treatments rooms as well as being very attractive and easy to wrap.
Dont forget to browse the new selection of products on Special offers.
These will end on 31st December 2011.
We have also sourced a 50 ml airless bottle which might be of interest to those keen to make preservative free creams and lotions.
Natural Skincare - The Aromatherapy Way in 3 Steps
Aromatherapy which makes use of essential oils and cold pressed vegetable oils can contribute enormously to the health and appearance of the skin, writes aromatherapy guru Salvatore Battaglia. Combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, essential oils and other natural ingredients, such as vegetable oils and waxes, have a better result than the more costly cosmetics available on retail shelves.
Finding the appropriate skin care routine is a combination of using the correct products for a particular skin type eg dry, oily, normal, combination, sensitive or mature, and finding products which are enjoyable to use. There are no short cuts or instant solutions.
The only way to improve the skin is to treat it well. Aromatherapy skin care is simpe and based on the age old routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising. Remember it takes between 21 to 28 days for skin to renew itself, so the skin care routine must be followed for at least three weeks before results can be seen.
Step 1 – CLEANSING
The basis of cleansing is simple – to remove excess sebum, make-up, pollution and dirt from the skin in a gentle manner. Using soaps to cleanse is not always recommended as most soaps are too alkaline which disrupt the skin’s natural acid mantle. Also most soaps have artificial fragrances which can cause irritation and sensitisation. Many cleansers on the market use aggressive detergents which strip the skin of its natual oil layer or sebum. Indications of using the wrong cleanser include a sensation of excessive toughness, drying, redness, itching or scaling or at the other end of the scale excessive feeling of greasiness. You need to try different products and decide what suits your individual skin best.
Using an oil-based cleansing balm is a gentle and effective way to remove all traces of dirt and makeup, leaving the skin nourished and supple. Its gentle nature makes it suitable for all types, including sensitive skin. Jan Kusmirek, author of Liquid Sunshine, and advocate for the use of the healing vegetable oils, is a firm believer in using vegetable oils to cleanse the skin in a gentle way without any aggressive cleaning agents. If you have never tried cleansing your skin with oils before, the winter is the ideal time to try and you can feel for yourself how the skin will be left feeling moistened and supple.
How do you use a balm cleanser?
Using a clean and dry finger, take a pea-size amount of Citrus Squash on the tip of one finger, spread onto the tips of the other fingers and onto the face, massaging well into the skin using circular motions. The warmth of the skin will quickly melt the balm, which will seem to sink into the skin. Then, using a warm wet cotton pad gently wipe your skin to remove the balm which will carry away with it any residue of dirt and make-up. Repeat several times until the cotton pad stays clean. The skin will now feel velvety smooth and refreshed, while the gorgeous aroma will have revitalised your spirits.
Cleanser - Citrus Squash
The first thing you will notice, after the refreshing and up-lifting aroma of the heady citrus fruits bouquet, is the gorgeous squash like iridescent lime green colour, which is due to the high content of chlorophyll in the fresh unrefined avocado oil.
The gorgeous aroma is fresh, uplifting and brightens a dull morning giving you cheer and is an emergency pep up before a busy day’s work or play. In the same vein, when used in the evening, it can clear the cobwebs from a busy day and allow you to unwind and switch focus.
Citrus Squash is handmade by Materia Aromatica with 100% Soil Association certified Organic oils and has a shelf life of one year. The nutritive fixed oils of avocado, olive, shea butter and almond oils are all superb in skincare: Avocado is prized for its softening and protecting capabilities and promotes cell regeneration especially for dry or fragile skin so makes an ideal choice in the balm. Olive oil is used as it benefits skin that is irritated, chapped or sensitive. Anti-inflammatory Shea Butter has marvellous skin softening properties and is known to leave the skin feeling softer after use. Sweet Almond softens and adds moisture. Beeswax is included to provide firmness and texture to the blend.
Citrus Squash is fragranced with a bouquet of citrus oils: mandarin, neroli, orange, lemon, petitgrain, bergamot and the sweet earthy tones of patchouli. Try it, you will be sure to find the sweet fresh aroma uplifting and appealing. It is definitely a mood lifter even on the dullest of days.
Persea gratissima (avocado), olea europaea (olive), butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), cera alba (beeswax), prunus dulcis (almond), cera alba (beeswax), Citrus Nobilis (mandarin), citrus aurantium amara (neroli), citrus medica limonum (lemon), citrus aurantium (petitgrain), pogostemon cablin (patchouli), citrus bergamia (bergamot), linalol*, limonum*, citronellol*
* Substances naturally occuring in essential oils
Step 2 – TONING
The next step in natural skin care would be to tone with an organic floral water to remove any traces of the cleanser, as well as to restore the skin’s acidity level and provide additional healing. You could either spray this directly onto the skin, which is particularly pleasant on a hot day, or alternatively you could apply it with a cotton pad.
Rose water is ideal for all skin types as a freshener or toner
Neroli floral water is ideal for combination skins and sensitive skin types
Lavender floral water is ideal for normal and sensitive skin types
Geranium floral water is balancing for dry or mature skins
Chamomile floral water is ideal for dry, sensitive and inflamed skin
Witch hazel floral water is an astringent ideally suited for oily skin.
You could of course blend 2 or more of your favourite floral waters to create your own unique aromatic toner.
Step 3 – MOISTURISING
Moisturisers will prevent moisture loss by adding a protective film to the skin. They also protect the skin against dirt, damage, pollution and harsh climatic and living conditions. Moisturisers give the skin a plump, smooth, supple appearance. There are 2 types of moisturisers that can be used. Ones that are water-based and are an emulsion of vegetable oils and water and ones that are made blending vegetable oils only. Which type should we be using is down to personal preferences. The creams with a lower oil content are often considered to be lighter and not so greasy. The greasiness of an oil blend is due to the characteristic of the oils chosen for the blend (some are absorded into the skin more quickly than others), the amount applied on the skin and how thirsty the skin is for the oils. Adjustments of how much oil one needs to feed the skin will be needed to suit one's preferences and comfort. An oil blend will go a long way as less is needed and will be a deeply nourishing exprience for your skin.
Cream and Body Milk
1. Morning Dew face cream - dry skin
Morning Dew contains ingredients certified by the Soil Association Certification Ltd and have been chosen to maximise the therapeutic properties for dry skin. The scent is light and intoxicating: essential oils of palmarosa, geranium, vetiver, orange, mandarin, ylang ylang and chamomile have been artfully blended to provide an aroma that is luxurious and uplifting, evoking hints of Madonna lilies with their petals still dewy fresh at dawn.
The texture is light and creamy without any trace of greasiness. The colour is gentle hint of palest cream, like the soft lighting of a new day. In no time at all your skin is revitalised and ready for the day.
Argan’s light and smooth texture absorbs quickly and easily, nourishing the skin with valuable unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. Due to its anti-oxidant properties, argan is particularly useful for mature or damaged skin, eczema, sun damage, scarring, wrinkles and stretch marks. Calendula has anti inflammatory and healing properties for dry, red, itchy skin. Jojoba is included for its balancing properties on dry skin, and is very emollient, making skin soft and smooth. Macadamia is a cell regenerator and is rich in palmitoleic acid which is found in sebum. As we age our palmitoleic acid levels drop so this makes Macadamia an ideal companion in a blend for older, drier skins. And last but certainly not least, we introduce to you something for all ages: beautiful bath oils that can be safely enjoyed by everybody to unwind at the end of a busy day. Most aromatherapists are familiar with the method needed to disperse essential oils in a bath in a manner that is safe and non greasy. This pre mixed product will safely and easily disperse the essential oils into the bath so is ideal for newcomers to aromatherapy.
Ordinarily essential oils are not directly water soluble. When added to a bath they have a tendency to form tiny particles on the water surface. The bath oil will improve the dispersal of the essential oils throughout the bath water. This will enhance the absorption by one’s body of the essential oils and their medicinal benefits whilst at the same time ensuring a rich and fragrant bath.
The bath Oils are 94% organic and can be kept for as long as two years. Each bottle contains 24 capfuls, enough for up to 24 baths. (1 capful equivalent to 4 drops of essential oil)
They come in 4 fragrances
- Peaceful Night - To relax and unwind
- Joie de Vivre - Uplifting
- Lavender - For a taste of Provence
- Children (for children over 36 months old)
Directions for use:
Run the bath then add 1 capful for children, or up to 2 capfuls for a teenager or adult. Stir the bathwater, which will now turn a milky white as the oils are evenly dispersed throughout the bathwater.
You can now immerse yourself and relax with deep breathing, as the cares of the day melt away.

A last minute insert to our Christmas Newsletter. This might particularly interest those who like to make their own cream formulations. We have recently sourced some airless bottles which offer a solution to avoid the use of preservatives.
Formulations which contain a percentage of water have to have a preservative in order to prevent the growth of bacteria which need water and oxygen to develop.
The ailess bottle keeps the product in a 100% air tight space. The bottom of the bottle is pushed up as the cream is pumped out of the bottle. At no point in time is the product in contact with air and oxygen, the two vital factors for bacteria to develop.
The bottle provides a neat way of presenting your product. It is easy to use and easy to carry in a hand-bag. Being air-tight also means that it won't leak and the product will always be waiting at the tip of the pump.
